Pro Wrestling Blitz: Uprising 3/23/12

Spring has arrived (in theory but not in practice as the weather still sucks), the clocks got moved ahead properly so it doesn’t get dark so early anymore, and Pro Wrestling Blitz held their most recent event, Uprising, this past Saturday night out in their home base of Joliet, IL. They had a solid lineup [...]

Dead Ending – Dead Ending II 12″ EP
Alternative Tentacles

What do you get when you combine one of the best front men of the early hardcore punk days with a bunch of very talented younger musicians who were likely influenced by said front man’s band? If you are talking about musicians in the Chicago area then what you get is Dead Ending. This supergroup is comprised of Vic Bondi of Articles of Faith (who happen to be one of the best Chicago bands of all time and were very influential in this area), Derek Grant of Alkaline Trio, Joe Principe of Rise Against, and Jeff Dean of The Bomb and a half million other bands. Punk rock worlds collided as these four guys from different generations of punk rock got together to form a punk rock band and the results are pretty stellar and rather familiar.

For lack of a better description, Dead Ending is a hardcore band. They play fast, they have loud guitars, they have a lot of energy, and they have a great singer with a powerful voice. Three of the five songs on this EP are pretty straight on hardcore that while fast, is not thrash. These are also the shorter songs on the record. The other two are longer and more varied, with “Indefinite Detention” being the true standout on the record with its fast verse and somewhat more melodic chorus. It ends up being a powerful song that is equally catchy. The last track is a more mid-tempo song that is heavy in a more plodding sense.

With the band playing this style of music and Bondi’s vocal delivery being how it is, it is hard not to compare this band to Articles of Faith. It’s easy to do because Dead Ending’s music is very similar to that of AoF and having the singer of AoF certainly makes it sound that much more alike. There is nothing wrong with that though. Dead Ending’s music is as good as this style of music gets and is timeless and Bondi’s vocal sound and delivery were built for this kind of music. It’s actually quite refreshing to hear him play this kind of music again after so long and he couldn’t have paired himself up with a better group of musicians who were more than capable to deliver a powerful bed of sound underneath Vic’s voice.

This EP is rather short in length and it almost could have been squeezed onto a 7″ EP but it probably would have come at the cost of sound quality so it is better that they opted for the 12″ size vinyl. It comes on standard weight black vinyl and contains not only a lyric sheet but also a download code for a digital copy of the record. This is something that should become a standard in the record business and it’s great to see it catching on more and more. The record has a nice, full, and loud sound and this style of music was meant to be listened to on the vinyl medium.

Word has it that the band is going to be making a third record and hopefully they stick around for a long time as they have a very comfortable sound that should appeal to both old-timers like myself and the younger generation of punks like the other members of the band. Nice job fellas!

The Middle Class – Out of Vogue The Early Material LP random colored vinyl

The Middle Class LP random color vinyl The Middle Class were a Southern California punk rock band from the late 1970′s who are often credited with putting out the first hardcore 7″ EP with their legendary and extremely valuable Out of Vogue EP. It was the band’s first release and they’d go on to put out another excellent 7″ and a less excellent LP (where they softened their sound and got way more experimental). They also had two amazing cuts on the Tooth and Nail compilation.

Like a lot of great punk rock, those records went out of print and the band broke up and the records became very rare collectors items that fetch large sums of money the few times they ever trade hands. A few years ago, Frontier Records did the universe a solid by compiling all the best Middle Class material on one handy LP (and CD). That record came on red vinyl and until now it was the only color it was issued on. Now that the original pressing is long gone, Frontier decided to give it a little face lift and issue it on a new color of vinyl.

This new pressing is on random colored vinyl. That means that you really don’t know what color you are going to get. The color variations are solely based on what leftover color vinyl compound the plant had on hand the day they pressed these up. Usually it results in most records looking purple, gray, brown, or some mixture of all three. As you can see in the photo of the one Frontier Records sent over, this example looks like brown marbled vinyl, similar to the “gravy colored vinyl” pressing of the Adolescents LP featured last week. Whether they are all similar to this or not is one of life’s great mysteries, but if you happen to pick one up for yourself from the label’s website, be sure to chime in and let me know what yours looks like.

You can get this fancy colored LP for a limited time directly from the Frontier Records website for a very reasonable price. If you have never heard this band before, fix that now and grab one!

Adolescents LP gravy colored vinyl

Adolescents LP gravy vinyl This year the first Adolescents LP turns 32 years old. When it came out it was a breath of fresh air and over three decades later it has still held up as one of the greatest punk albums of all time. They were considered a hardcore band at the time when that style of music was just getting started and the band was true innovators and part of a Southern California scene that would become hugely influential.

Just like the band has come and gone over the years (and they are currently still active), this LP has had its share of color changes and limited editions. It has come out on many colors of the rainbow over the past few years and now there’s a new limited color to add to your collection courtesy of Frontier Records.

This new color is lovingly referred to as “gravy colored vinyl”. It is brown with black and white marbling and it does kind of resemble gravy. The record comes with an insert and the artwork remains the same as always. The music on this is timeless and every bit as great now as it was back when this was released and I was much, much younger! Like the other colored pressings of this record, it won’t be around for very long so make sure you grab it from your local record store or get one direct from Frontier Records while the getting is good!
