The Middle Class – Out of Vogue The Early Material LP random colored vinyl

The Middle Class LP random color vinyl The Middle Class were a Southern California punk rock band from the late 1970′s who are often credited with putting out the first hardcore 7″ EP with their legendary and extremely valuable Out of Vogue EP. It was the band’s first release and they’d go on to put out another excellent 7″ and a less excellent LP (where they softened their sound and got way more experimental). They also had two amazing cuts on the Tooth and Nail compilation.

Like a lot of great punk rock, those records went out of print and the band broke up and the records became very rare collectors items that fetch large sums of money the few times they ever trade hands. A few years ago, Frontier Records did the universe a solid by compiling all the best Middle Class material on one handy LP (and CD). That record came on red vinyl and until now it was the only color it was issued on. Now that the original pressing is long gone, Frontier decided to give it a little face lift and issue it on a new color of vinyl.

This new pressing is on random colored vinyl. That means that you really don’t know what color you are going to get. The color variations are solely based on what leftover color vinyl compound the plant had on hand the day they pressed these up. Usually it results in most records looking purple, gray, brown, or some mixture of all three. As you can see in the photo of the one Frontier Records sent over, this example looks like brown marbled vinyl, similar to the “gravy colored vinyl” pressing of the Adolescents LP featured last week. Whether they are all similar to this or not is one of life’s great mysteries, but if you happen to pick one up for yourself from the label’s website, be sure to chime in and let me know what yours looks like.

You can get this fancy colored LP for a limited time directly from the Frontier Records website for a very reasonable price. If you have never heard this band before, fix that now and grab one!

Adolescents LP gravy vinyl This year the first Adolescents LP turns 32 years old. When it came out it was a breath of fresh air and over three decades later it has still held up as one of the greatest punk albums of all time. They were considered a hardcore band at the time when that style of music was just getting started and the band was true innovators and part of a Southern California scene that would become hugely influential.

Just like the band has come and gone over the years (and they are currently still active), this LP has had its share of color changes and limited editions. It has come out on many colors of the rainbow over the past few years and now there’s a new limited color to add to your collection courtesy of Frontier Records.

This new color is lovingly referred to as “gravy colored vinyl”. It is brown with black and white marbling and it does kind of resemble gravy. The record comes with an insert and the artwork remains the same as always. The music on this is timeless and every bit as great now as it was back when this was released and I was much, much younger! Like the other colored pressings of this record, it won’t be around for very long so make sure you grab it from your local record store or get one direct from Frontier Records while the getting is good!

Resistance Pro: Among the Living 2/24/13

Sunday afternoon, Resistance Pro Wrestling held their latest event in Lockport titled Among the Living. This wasn’t a typical RPro show, this show was the Sam Thompson memorial benefit show. Sam worked for Resistance Pro from the time it started until his untimely passing last year which rocked the entire company. Sam was universally loved by everyone in the business and everyone who ever spent more than 5 minutes with him and was one of the strongest people on the planet. Everyone who worked the show donated their pay and their time for this special cause and there was a great feeling of unity in the building.

Cockney Rejects/Youth Brigade/The Bollweevils 2/21/13 at Reggies

Thursday night was a night for punk rock veterans as three bands that have been around a minimum of 20 years shared a bill with way too many other bands for a weeknight show over at Reggies. The threat of a snow storm couldn’t keep the place from filling up full of punk rock fans from multiple generations.

The Crombies, who have at least one member from Deals Gone Bad in their band, played some upbeat ska. They had a classic 2-tone style to their music and they had a bunch of fans in the audience who were dancing along to their songs.

Modern Day Rippers played fast tempo, punchy punk that often crossed the hardcore border. The played  with more energy than usual and their set was blistering. Singer, Germ, was his usual entertaining self. These guys are a lot of fun and well worth checking out if you get a chance.

The Bollweevils made a rare appearance to play this show. They easily stole the show with their tuneful and catchy hardcore. The band not only played some of their regular staples but they played some songs they rarely ever play. If that wasn’t enough they also played four new songs! The new songs sounded as good as anything in their discography and they really need to get them released on a new record immediately.

The legendary Youth Brigade quickly followed. They were down a Stern brother and instead had two different members and were now a four-piece. They played all the “hits” from their early days along with some newer songs that aren’t really that new anymore either. They sounded great, talked a lot between songs and the crowd went bananas during their entire set.

The crowd thinned out a bit due to the snowstorm when the Cockney Rejects took the stage. They played a long set full of their classics and the crowd up front which was heavy on the skinheads sang along and danced around.  The band had a lot of energy that the crowd picked up on and gave it right back to them. They played so many songs that it’s hard to imagine anyone who was a fan of theirs was disappointed and if anyone was you’d be hard pressed to detect it while scanning the crowd.  They put a nice finish to a long night (too long really) that featured some great punk legends that was worth driving home in a storm and staying up late.
