Since By Man 11/3/05 at Beat Kitchen

Tonight I went to see Since By Man at the Beat Kitchen. They played second on a four band bill. The show started really early, 5:30pm to be exact. I guess there must have been a late show scheduled at the club. When I arrived a few minutes before the doors were to open, there was already a line going in both directions of the club. I picked the shorter one, which was the wise choice as it was also the proper one for guest list and will call.

The Fall of Troy were first and they were from Seattle I believe, or somewhere near there. They played some pretty intense and long songs that were mostly very aggressive, but would change tempo into some more melodic parts (the rest hold of hardcore) and then some long instrumental parts, and back to the power. Through all this organized chaos, there was a lot of guitar wankery, but somehow it all worked and I really enjoyed them. The crowd did too, because all those kids with the white belts and goofy haircuts were going mental. If I wasn’t broke, I’d have picked up their record for sure.

Since by Man were next, and they were my reason for being there. I was informed by youngdave that their singer, Sam, was in the hospital with throat lesions! I was both concerned for Sam’s well being (I have spoken to the dude on many occasions as I always attend their shows and he is a nice guy), and bummed out at his absence. The band would still play with someone from the headlining band, Fear Before the March of Flames, filling in for Sam. Allegedly this fellow “knew the lyrics as good if not more than Sam himself”.

So Since By the Man of Flames took the stage and opened with a song from their first album. The band played with as much intensity as ever and I have to admit, this Sam substitute did an admirable job and he did in fact know all the words! While it wasn’t the same, or as good as the “real” Since By Man, they did deliver the goods and you have to give them props for getting up their sans-frontman and still wanting to play for the people. They played mostly songs from the first album and two songs of their new album that came out last week (and is damn good). The kids were into it, especially during “The Enemy” where a bunch of them started climbing up on stage and doing stage dives.

Bear vs. Shark and Fear Before the March of Flames were to follow, but despite liking Bear vs. Shark, I didn’t feel like sticking around in that over crowded sold out room any longer so I split. I hope that Sam will be OK and that Since By Man will be able to tour again sometime in the near future because I plan on keeping my long-standing vow of seeing them every time they come to town.
