I'm from Gateshead in the North of England. Somehow, back in 1982/83, S.I.N. started sending their releases to our local radio station in Newcastle (Metro Radio). Metro normally plays middle road rock or pop, and has lots of phone in shows - a typical provincial radio station in the UK. However, at the time, they did have a heavy metal show, and the DJ (Alan Robson) played I Think I Love You, or the first 30 seconds, before dismissing it as 'pretty powerful rubbish'. My brother and I taped those 30 seconds and were hooked. We found the 'I Think I Love You' 7" back in '83, but the LPs (Big Apple & Diet) were impossible to find in the North of England back then. I was lucky enough to see Ism at the Continental in 1993 (support was Sea Monster)- I was spending a week in NYC dossing on a friend's hotel floor, couldn't believe my luck when I found out Ism were playing. I got the 'Hits that Missed' comp CD at that show, but still no sign of the LP. I've just found a copy this week, motivated by the amazing posts on YouTube of the A7 Reunion show. My first impressions are just amazement that the record is so good, Ism must be one of the most underated hardcore bands of all time. A Diet for the Worms is up there with the all time classics from Black Flag, Minor Threat, Jerrys Kids, etc. Anyone involved with the band reading this - you MUST get this music re-issued on CD. Songs like Moon the Moonies, John Hinckley Jr and Drunk Driving are just too good to languish in relative obscurity!

Well ,I can add alittle to the Ism history. I lived in the Great Neck Terrace Aptartments, very close to Douglaston Queens.A friend one night said lets go by this guys house in Doulaston and in the basement these guys were jamming shit like Zappa and Cream ,drinking beer and smokin weed...One of the guys name was Larry Rey-soon to become Joe Ism's drummer.Larry was frickin an amazing drummer.Andy Aledort was always there as well(later became senior editor of Guitar World Mag& filled in with Double Trouble after Stevie Ray Vaughn died...)When Larry joined up with Ism I remember saying to myself what a waist of tallent to wind up playing playing punk wich historically did not require much talent but more attitude and so forth. So Larry says "why dont you come down and check out my band tonight at Queens College(1982 I think) we're called 'Ism' you know like Jism-(semen or cum) with no J hence Ism- Larry was a bit of a burn - out intelectual. The were unlike anything Ive ever seen or heard anywere till this day and Larry gave a copy of "Diet For The Worms" witch I still have. It truly is a musical masterpice. I saw then at A-7 and they did not go on til 6 am -No Kidding!Iguess the cops figured we would rather they have us punks in A-7 than hanging out in Thomskin Square Park.I remember doing coke right of the bar that night. They kicked ass,and if you you ever met Joe Ism he is pure hype . Larry went on to Las Vegas and after waching his girlfriend get murder while she closing the bar she worked at by a robber with a double barrel shot gun, he could not live with himself any longer and wound up dying of a Heroine overdose.Sad! I remember running into Joe Ism on Astor Place off 3rd Ave in a dark stairway going up to a a punky bar with marker graffit and band bilbord stuck all over and I said Hey Your Joe Ism and I guess he was so high that he almost had a heartattack and almost fell down the stairs the fact that someone actually recognized him or maybe people were after him but he was extremly paranoid and flattered. In my mind he is a true rock star prodigy. My favorite song is "Shit List" and "Drunk Driving" and "White Castle 3 am" and "Dance Club/ Meat Market" and "Herpes Simplex-II" "Auto Theft in New York City"

Again...

Let's hear from Joe.

Pass it on...

If he's retired from music, fine. If he's afraid of being drawn back to the dark side, well, let's face it... there is no "scene" to go back to, the internet took care of that.

It had nothing to do with the CD to the best of my knowledge. I beleive it was drug related. I'll ask him the next time he calls me.
